How it all Started

The SOMMA Food Bank (Salkum–Onalaska–Mossyrock Ministerial Association) began in 1992 with a shared vision: to bring churches and community members together to serve families in need.

It was first started by Al Steffon in the old Grange Hall in Silver Creek. In the early 2000s, the Onalaska School District offered two portable classrooms, which were moved to the current site in Salkum. Thanks to the generosity of a local church that provided property to place the buildings on, SOMMA found a permanent home.

For more than 30 years, the food bank has continued to provide food, care, and hope to households throughout  Lewis County. Through the faithful support of congregations, volunteers, and donors, SOMMA remains a vital source of help for neighbors in Salkum, Onalaska, Mossyrock, and beyond.
